In July 2026, ESPOL’s Central Library was transformed into an art space with the exhibition “Encounters on Canvas and Paper”, a show showcasing the academic work produced in the third parallel section of the Painting Techniques course, taught by lecturer Daniel Castelo at the Faculty of Art, Design and Audiovisual Communication (FADCOM).
The exhibition presents a selection of works that illustrate the students’ learning process in the study of colour, composition and mastery of two fundamental painting techniques: acrylic and watercolour. Through these works, the university community was able to witness the technical and conceptual progress achieved during the second academic term. The exhibition was organised around two main themes. The acrylic section explores the materiality of pigment and the painterly gesture through the reinterpretation of classical compositional structures, using textures, fragmented brushstrokes and contrasts of light that lend dynamism to each work.
For its part, the watercolour section features portraits and landscapes created on paper, where transparency, glazing and the fluidity of water allow artists to construct images full of depth and sensitivity. These works reflect mastery of a technique that demands precision, observation and control over the materials.
Beyond showcasing academic work, ‘Encounters on Canvas and Paper’ demonstrates the students’ artistic growth and their ability to apply technical fundamentals that will later prove essential in disciplines such as illustration, editorial design, art direction and visual communication.
Through initiatives such as this, FADCOM strengthens the all-round education of its students and promotes spaces where learning extends beyond the classroom, bringing art and design closer to the entire polytechnic community through exhibitions that showcase the talent and development of its future professionals.
